This years Low Carbon Vehicle Event Sept  10th – 11th was the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our latest innovations in electric and hybrid powertrain technologies. The annual event is the UK’s Premier Low Carbon Vehicle event incorporating a technology exhibition, conference program and test drive opportunities.

Together with high-performance transmission specialist Oerlikon Graziano, Vocis exhibited a whole family of electric and hybrid vehicle transmissions. The state-of-the-art transmissions were accompanied by two demonstrator vehicles used to evaluate and showcase the innovative products.

Mercedes Vito minibus equipped with 4SED

The first vehicle was a Mercedes Vito minibus equipped with 4SED (4-Speed Electric Drive) and a seamless shift transmission for vehicles with two electric motors. This vehicle was part funded by NVN and was available for the Ride & Drive event in the outdoor exhibition area.

There are many benefits in utilising two small electric motors with multiple ratios instead of one larger motor. The arrangement allows up to 15% reduction in energy use from the multiple operating possibilities offered by the powertrain layout and very simple mechanical design. The mechanical design is even simpler than conventional manual transmissions with only one actuator driving two dog engagement devices. The electric machines are coupled directly to their input shafts meaning no clutches, and the shift events are managed by the transmission controller utilising the accurate electric motor torque control to give seamless shifting.

The second vehicle was a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG which is equipped with our OGeco powertrain; an automated transmission (AMT) with integrated 2-Speed electric drive. This hybrid system is an entirely Oerlikon Graziano/Vocis funded R&D programme.

OGeco Powertrain: an Automated Transmission (AMT) with integrated 2-Speed Electric Drive

The OGeco transmission is cost effective, light and efficient, and utilises torque infill to provide near-seamless shifting. Hybrid technology helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent, particularly at low speeds, and significantly reduces Co2 emissions.
